Wow, wow wow wow. This was so not what I was expecting. I was expecting writing more like the Kushiel’s series and was very scared to try reading this. But this was so awesome, just very different than the Kushiel’s series by Jacqueline Carey. A good short description of this book would be think of Lesbian Hunger Games. I definitely give this book 5 stars.
In a town that is cut off from the rest of the world, in southern Texas, a woman has a young son and the father is dead. She falls for a mysterious man who is a genetically altered man, or part werewolf. He is not supposed to be fertile but she ends up pregnant with a girl. The father is forced to flee around the time of her birth. The book is about the young daughter named Loup and her brother Tommy.
Tommy trains to be a boxer with the promise of if he can beat a soldier, he and Loup would get free transportation out of the outpost (which is supposedly locked off because of some virus). Tommy dies when he finally gets his chance. Loup of course trains in secret after he dies. That is all I’m going to say about the book because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. The book is fantastic. I did read someones review who didn’t like it because of all the boxing. I hate sports, you do not need to like boxing to enjoy this book. The book is about Loup, her sexuality (in the later part of the book) and life. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!!!
